The first summer festival in Japan that you must attend is the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival which is held in Tokyo. That said, the festival was first held in 1733 and has survived the Meiji Restoration, the World War for decades to come.


True to its name, this festival takes place on the banks of the Sumida River and is one of the most popular festivals in Japan. The festival starts at 7 p.m. local time and you can enjoy the beautiful fireworks in the Tokyo skyline for a full 90 minutes.



2. Sanno Matsuri, Tokyo




Still in the city of Tokyo, you will find one of the summer festivals in Japan that is no less interesting called the Sanno Matsuri or the Sanno Festival. The Sanno Festival is one of the three major festivals in Tokyo and is held on even-numbered years.


The Sanno Matsuri usually takes place in mid-June, usually from June 7 to 17. During the festival, you will see around 300 people in traditional costumes accompanied by musicians on floats and mikoshi stands. The parade starts at Hie Shrine starting at 8 am and parades around downtown Tokyo then returns before 5 pm.



3. Gion Matsuri, Kyoto




The Gion Matsuri or Gion Festival occupies the second position as a summer festival in Japan that you should attend. Held in Kyoto during the month of July, the festival consists of many festive events until the biggest procession takes place on July 17th.


The Gion Festival was first held in 869 and has an almost unbroken history. This festival was first held to appease the gods after the plague and until now this festival still follows the traditions from time immemorial, including choosing a local boy to be a holy messenger which this holy messenger cannot set foot on the ground from July 13 until the end parade on July 17th.



4. Aomori Nebuta Matsuri, Aomori




This summer festival in Japan is no less exciting than another festival, namely the Aomori Nebuta Matsuri. This festival is one of the biggest festivals in the Tohoku region and is held in Aomori.


Nebuta itself refers to a giant paper parade ride in the form of a warrior that looks fierce. According to stories circulating in the local community, the shogun Sakanoue no Tamuramaro is remembered for placing a giant lit lantern on the hilltop with him and his soldiers while waiting to ambush the Emishi Tribe.


This Aomori Nebuta Festival features dancers wearing haneto and shouting the word “rassera” while dancing. The fun thing is, you can participate in the parade by using Haneto too.



5. Tenjin Matsuri, Osaka




The Tenjin Matsuri or Tenjin Festival is also included in the list of summer festivals in Japan that you must attend. This festival is also included in the list of the top 3 festivals in Japan because it is more than 1000 years old.


The Tenjin Festival is held in the vicinity of Osaka's Tenmangu Shrine and has two main parts to the festival, namely on land and on water. The festival which takes place on land sees a procession of thousands of people dressed in palace style from the 18th to the 12th centuries accompanied by mikoshi, which are miniature shrines carried on the shoulders. While the festival is held on the water occurs when thousands of participants get into boats on the Tenmanbashi Bridge and sail on the river. Interestingly, at sunset a fire will be lit on the boat, creating a spectacle for visitors, even at night you can enjoy the beauty of the fireworks.



6. Awa Dance Festival, Awa

7. Yosakoi Festival, Koshi




Yosakoi Festival is one of the summer festivals in Japan that you should attend. The festival which takes place in the city of Kochi is held from August 10 to 11 and has been going on for 60 years.

9. Akita Kanto Matsuri, Akita




Apart from the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri, another summer festival in Japan related to Tanabata is the Akita Kanto Matsuri. This festival which takes place in Akita is also known as the Lantern Pole Festival and is held on August 3-6.


During this festival you will see performers showing off their skills in balancing a Kanto pole where paper lanterns are on top. The size of each pole also varies, some are up to 12 meters long and weigh 50 kilograms and can carry 46 lanterns with candles inside. When they paraded the lantern poles, they were certainly enlivened by booming music that made the event even more lively.



10. Nagaoka Fireworks Festival, Nagaoka




The last summer festival in Japan is the Nagaoka Fireworks Festival. True to its name, this festival is held in the city of Nagaoka and is one of the largest fireworks festivals in Japan.


The festival, which is usually held on August 2-3, was first held after the second world war as a form of recovery. This makes at every festival opened, the first fireworks that appear are white, which is a symbol of those who died in air raids.
