Top 5 hiking destinations in Germany

With Germany's natural treasures such as old forests, charming lakes, hills with vineyards and the Baltic Coast, it's no surprise that hiking is one of the most popular activities there.

Want to know the most stunning natural hiking trails? Take a look at the 5 best destinations for hiking in Germany according to the following global traveler.

1. Lohmen, Sachsen

Hiking around Lohmen village offers both quantity and quality. The hike is over 1,200 km along the Saxon Switzerland National Park, a stunning national park that is very popular in Germany. Imagine elongated plateaus, hills and gorges created by volcanic eruptions, and mystical 1 million year old sandstone nestled in the jungle. The park's most popular is the Bastei, a 194-meter-high natural monolith that overshadows the Elbe river. Explore the 'golden triangle' hiking trail from Wehlen via Kurort Rathen for an even more memorable hike. Enjoy views of the Elbe river and this national park from the Berghotel Bastei.

2. Blankenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt

Head to Blankenburg for 8,000 km of hiking trails, including the Harzer Wandernadel. This trail is located in Harz National Park and is a 'paradise' for outdoor enthusiasts. Here, you can collect points for successfully passing various challenging levels, by collecting green stamps in hiking 'passports' at checkpoints along the way. You can also enjoy the mountains, natural resources, castles/monasteries and various other cultures. Enjoy views of the city and Blankenburg castle with a stay at Hotel Villa Viktoria Luise.

3. Ilsenburg, Sachsen-Anhalt

Ilsenburg, a small town at the foot of the Harz mountains, is frequented by climbers wanting to get to the top of The Brocken. This 1,141-meter-high mountain offers a panoramic view of the entire region. You can follow hiking trails and pass Witches Altar (Hexenalter) and Devil's Pulpit (Teufelskanzel), two giant granite rocks that resemble cliffs. If you're a little lazy, there is a steam train that can take you to the top of the mountain. To rest, you can stay at Pension Stellwerk.

4. Sebnitz, Sachsen

Located at the entrance to the Saxon Switzerland National Park, Sebnitz entices visitors to see Bastei and its mysterious rock formations. In addition, this small town also offers a variety of natural attractions, including the Lichtenhain Falls and the Kirnitzsch Valley. Explore Malerweg (Painter's Way), a popular 112km trail in Europe. It takes eight days of walking to complete, but you can also split it depending on your stamina. Located a few kilometers from Bastei, Pension Am Finkenberg is an inn that offers hikers a hearty breakfast to start their hike.

5. Masserberg, Thüringen

Masserberg is located in Rennsteig, a 700 year old hiking trail, Europe's oldest. It is 169 km long and spans the highlands of the Thuringian Forest. Known for its historic and scenic views, the trail is marked by 1,300 16th-century parapets, which will lead hikers to a virgin forest, lush meadows and valleys with crystal-clear natural springs. There is a tradition for climbers here, which is to greet each other by saying 'gut runst!', not hello or good morning. (The word runst isn't in the dictionary, so you'll have to come yourself if you want to know what it means). Tired of hiking, you can relax and rest at Hotel & Café Daheim.
